About Ayurveda

Adding years to life, adding life to years is the essence ofAyurveda-The Indian Art Of Healing.

The basics of Ayurveda can be summarized in the shlokas below:

The science which describes the span of life and tells about useful and harmful, happy and unhappy life and also gives guidelines for what is beneficial and harmful to life is Ayurveda.

The aim of ayurveda is to maintain the health of a healthy person and to cure the diseases.

Ayurveda is the ancientmost health care system of the world which has its mention in our age old Vedas especially- Atharvaveda. It is considered as the most comprehensive holistic healing system. This ancient knowledge is more than 5000 years ago by sages for the well being of humans. It is original source of many modern natural healing therapies. It is nature’s prescription for physical as well as mental diseases and is the ancient wisdom which is best suited for modern man.It is duly approved by W.H.O.

Ayurveda means the ‘science of life’and is made up of two words – “Ayu” means life, and “Veda” means pure knowledge or science. Ayurveda can thus be translated as the knowledge of the span of life.According to the ancient Ayurvedic scholar Charaka, ayu or life is comprised of four essential aspects – physical, mental, psychological and spiritual. We identify with our physical bodies, yet, underlying our physical structure is the mind, which not only controls our thought processes but helps assist us in carrying out day-to-day activities such as respiration, circulation, digestion and elimination. The mind and the body work in conjunction with one another to regulate our psychology. The clarity of our senses or psychology is an essential part in allowing the mind and body to integrate their functions and help in keeping us healthy and happy individuals. Ayurveda believes in existence of soul (the underlined self) before and after life.

Ayurveda views a person as a unique individual made up of five primary elements. The elements are ether (space), air, fire, water, and earth. All the functions of the body are controlled by 3 vital energies called ‘The Doshas’. Equilibrium between these 3 forces is essential for the maintenance of well-being. When the Doshas become imbalanced, health suffers. Ayurveda states that health is not just the absence of disease but much beyond it. A perfect balance and harmony of body, mind and soul is health. It undertakes all aspects of health ie: prevention of disease, promotion of health and its preservation. Ayurveda emphasizes the maintenance of positive good health by the control of diet, lifestyle, Yoga and Pranayam (correct breathing technique). Rejuvenation is a very important part of Ayurvedic treatment.

Relating to Ayurveda

Today is the age of IT ie. computers, i-Pods, mobiles, internets, satellite, TV’s, fax and so on.The concepts applied today prove that the essential base of the world is not ultimately physical but much beyond it. Similarly, the modern medical science, which has a complete base of materialistic (cellular) concepts, is looking towards the conscious – based understanding of the medical issues i.e. AYURVEDA.  The age of IT can be equated to the age of consciousness and, Ayurveda definitely is a part of it. Albert Einstein quotes about his works saying, “I have made Gita and Sanskrit literature the main source of my inspiration and guidance for the purpose of scientific investigations and formation of my theories”. Nanotechnology – the newest concept of this age, is also being related to the concepts used in Ayurveda , ages back , for the preparation of medicines . All this and the other innumerable researches done in the West since long, show that Ayurveda is a complete and a fully evolved ‘Science of Life’.  It can be equated to a coded computer language (the language here is in Sanskrit) but, the scholars who understand this language today are scarce. As all the original Ayurvedic texts are in Sanskrit, it is only a matter of decoding the language in its proper sense. Ayurveda is not to be questioned but it needs to be explored and the concepts innovated and used to the best for todays’ lifestyle.
